A Shining Light in Power Engineering Education

Regulation, Compliance and Safety (UQ) - course description

Course Code:

MECH7650
Course Name:

Regulation, Compliance and Safety (UQ)
Course Description:

A general knowledge of the power generation practice is required for this course in addition to basic engineering and mathematics skills. A good command of English language is also important.
This course provides a review and study of the acts, regulations, standards, and codes influencing the activities of operating and maintaining power generating plants; compliance issues within the regulatory framework; liability of directors and managers.
The aim of this course is to provide the graduate engineers working for the power industry with theoretical grounding and regulatory knowledge to identify understand and analyse the risks associated with operating a power generation plant and to develop measures to control and mitigate such risks.
Successful completion of this course should enable one to:
  • recognise a wide range of potential hazards and develop risk mitigation strategies in a heavy industrial plant
  • understand the basic principles of risk management and the relevant standards
  • understand the broad regulatory framework under which a power plant operates
  • understand the relevant standards and inspection rules for pressure equipment, cranes and lifts
  • understand global issues such as climate change and mandatory renewable energy targets that may affect the power generation industry in the future
